Accidents

ALTON. ILL. A 37-year-old truck driver was killed in an accident at an industrial site. The victim was standing near the end of a roll- off box behind his truck. The driver of 'another truck was attempting to load a second roll-off box that was stuck in the mud by using the truck's lift and cable. There was slack in the cable and the sec- ond box slipped and rolled into the first box, crushing the victim. According to the coroner, the victim suffered massive blunt trauma and was pronounced dead on the scene. The local police, the company that owns the industrial site, and OSHA, are investigating the accident.

DENTON. TEXAS One worker died and another was seriously injured when the boom of a drilling rig made contact with an overhead power line. The victims were drilling in a vacant lot where a house was being built. According to police, the electricity blew out the &ont tire on the truck and started a fire that burned the equipment and an area around it. A witness to the accident attempted CPR on the victim, who later died. Paramedics arrived and called for an air ambulance for the second victim.

GOOD LAND. KAN. A 30-yeas-old man died in a forklift accident. According to the sheriff's department, the victim was loading crates onto a semi-trailer and did not have the forks raised high enough. When the forklift hit the trailer, the victim was thrown forward and into the framework of the lift. At the same time, his body apparently hit the lever, which caused the forks to lower. As a result, the load fell and crushed him. A deputy coroner pronounced the victim dead on arrival. The sheriff's office investigated the accident.

VANCOUVER. BRITISH COLUMBIA. CANADA A man in his early 20's was injured in a forklift accident at a pon. The victim had been using a forklift to unload material from a cruise ship when the machine fell into the water. Co-workers retrieved the victim who was then transponed to a local hospital by ambulance. The victim was treated for a head injury sUstained during the accident. The Workers Compensation Board investigated the accident.

SAN BERNARDINO, CALIF. A 21-year-old worker died in a forklift accident at a river wash. The victim was operating a forklift when the boom struck the underside of a highway over-pass. The forklift boom collapsed and crushed the victim. The forklift continued rolling for about 25 feet before careening off a dirt path and coming to rest against a dirt beam. A deputy coroner said the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. There was no word on the investigation into the accident.

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS. ILL. Three workers were hospitalized when a forklift punctured a 50-gallon barrel that contained a poisonous substance. According to fire officials, the employees were transported to a local hospital and treated for inhalation injuries after breathing the chemical. The rest of the building was evacuated as a precaution. Workers at the site were able to contain the spill to its immediate area until environmental specialists could come in and finish the job. The was no word about the investigation into the accident.
