Caterpillar Stock Up on China Expansion

Caterpillar Shares Surge on Plans to Expand Further Into China

Caterpillar Inc. shares surged Friday after the company announced it has partnered with a Shanghai industrial park developer to expand the construction and machinery equipment maker's presence in China.

The Peoria, Ill.-based company said it has signed three nonbinding memoranda of understanding with Shanghai Lingang Economic Development Co. In addition, Caterpillar said it is in discussions with other Chinese manufacturers on future investments.

The announcement was seen as a shrewd move for Caterpillar, which has been targeting business overseas as a way to offset weakening domestic sales. Caterpillar has steadily been increasing its business in China to tap into the nation's expected construction boom.

"These initiatives are tangible examples of our plans for future growth across all lines of Caterpillar's business in China," Chief Executive Jim Owens said in a statement.

The subsidiaries will partner with the Lingang Industrial Area to establish a regulatory system for trade, establish the area as the main remanufacturing center for Caterpillar machines, and set up a service center.

Caterpillar said it first sold products in China in 1975 and three years later opened an office in Beijing, which is now its marketing headquarters. Caterpillar now operates 10 facilities in mainland China -- some of which are wholly owned -- and employs about 2,000 people in that nation.

In December, Caterpillar acquired a minority stake in Shandong SEM Machinery Co., which manufactures wheel loaders. The company is also said to be interested in buying a stake in Xugong Machinery, whose parent Xuzhou Construction Machinery Group Inc. is one of China's industry leaders.

"Our global markets continue to exhibit the fundamental strengths needed for further growth," Owens said after the company released second-quarter earnings in July. "The strength of our markets is clearly not a blip on the radar."

The company reported second-quarter profits of $760 million and sales rose 23 percent to a record $9.36 billion. Machinery sales grew 25 percent in the quarter, while engine sales increased 22 percent and financial products expanded 19 percent. Sales were up worldwide, from 9 percent in Asia and China -- a market Cater

BUILDTECH'2005 - Construction Equipment and Building Technologies for Ukraine

BuildTech' 2005
The 3rd International Trade Show for Construction Equipment and Building Technologies
Kiev, Ukraine October 11-14, 2005.

This website is about BuildTech'2005 - another Construction Equipment Trade Show for North American manufacturers and distributors of construction equipment and machinery.

A historic transformation is under way on Europe's eastern frontier. Ukraine, the continent's second largest country and sixth most populous nation, has set its sights firmly on joining the club of developed democracies.
As a popular set of new leaders shape their plans for this hoped for great leap forward, many foreign companies, especially those with experience in central Europe's transition economies, are keenly studying where they could fit in.
New democratic Ukrainian government is heading towards WTO (World Trade Organization) targeting accession in the nearest future. Consumers and producers can enjoy secure supply being protected by ground-rules of international commerce.

American and Canadian manufacturers of equipment and machinery should be very interested in the Ukrainian market because Ukraine can import North American (ANSI/ CSA/ SAE/ ASME) new and used equipment. Ukraine is not a EU member state, and therefore CE marking is not required in Ukraine. If you have European branches, you could let them rest this time.

Location of BuildTech'2005 show is excellent - the absolute majority of potential buyers is located in Kiev.
The highest in the Country real estate prices keep high-rise constructing booming in the Ukrainian Capital. Kiev is the site of the biggest government supported projects in transportation and infrastructure development. As a Ukrainian heritage the City enjoys restoration and renovation funding.
Most of the Ukrainian contactors are big Companies with multiple branches, daughter-companies, construction material production divisions, and equipment yards. As a rule, buying power is concentrated in hands of the Companies Headquarters. Big buyers make dominant part of the Ukrainian construction equipment market.
Rental companies of North American range don't exist in Ukraine. Rental services are on demand, but potential rentees still own their equipment. New wave of small housing and landscaping contractors from the City's suburbs is looking for compact equipment and tooling.
Please visit our Construction Ukraine - News website for more details.

Kiev is the great tourists attraction place. 1500 years old Kiev is called "Mother of Russian Cities" for its role in Russian and Ukrainian history. Comfort of a European City is enriched by historical sights and entertainment. Multitude of museums, theaters, restaurants, casinos, and nightclubs make Kiev a great place to be.
